Gas Safe registered engineer for Worcester Bosch boiler repairs and servicing, gas safety inspections and landlord certificates (CP12) across Bristol.
Almost all of Julian's work comes from repeat customers and recommendations. Over forty years, that is the only measure that means anything.
Whether your boiler has broken down, needs its annual service, or you’re a landlord needing a gas safety certificate, Julian is a Gas Safe registered engineer you can rely on for safe, honest work.
Gas work is one of the few trades where the law sets a hard line. Any work on a gas appliance or gas pipework in this country must be carried out by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register, and it is a criminal offence for anybody else to do it, paid or unpaid. That applies to fitting a cooker as much as it does to installing a boiler, and it applies whether the person doing it calls themselves a plumber, a handyman or a friend who knows what he is doing.
Installation, replacement, full systems and annual servicing on all makes.
Inspections, landlord certificates and gas leak detection.
Cookers and hobs connected, and properties off the mains gas grid covered.
Any work on a gas appliance in this country must be carried out by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. It is a legal requirement, and it exists because badly fitted gas work kills people. Julian is Gas Safe registered, reg. 198984, and has been for the whole of his working life.
His registration also covers LPG and unvented hot water, two qualifications a good number of engineers do not hold, which is why some jobs take several phone calls to place locally.
The bulk of the work is boiler installation, replacement and full central heating systems. Annual servicing covers every make of gas boiler, while repairs are Worcester Bosch only, deliberately.
A gas safety inspection checks every appliance in the property, the pipework feeding them, and the flues and ventilation that keep them burning safely. It includes a tightness test on the whole installation and a combustion analysis on each appliance.
For rented property the same check is issued as a landlord gas safety certificate, which you are legally required to hold and renew every twelve months.
Gas leak detection traces escapes on pipework, joints and appliances. Note that this is gas leak work only. Julian does not take on general plumbing, water leaks or bathrooms.
Gas cooker and hob installation is covered, including fitting or moving the bayonet point and the stability bracket that stops a freestanding cooker tipping forward. A delivery driver cannot legally connect a gas cooker, and nor can you.
Properties off the mains gas grid are covered too through LPG boiler work, which takes in installation, replacement, servicing and safety certificates on LPG systems.
Every registered engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card. Asking to see it is normal and no competent engineer will take offence. If someone is reluctant, that in itself has told you what you needed to know.
The card carries a photograph, a licence number and a start and expiry date. A card that has run out is not a card, and cards are reissued annually rather than held indefinitely.
The reverse lists exactly which types of work the engineer is qualified for. Boilers, cookers, fires and LPG are separate categories. Being registered for one does not make somebody competent to work on another.
The registration number can be checked on the Gas Safe Register website or by phone before the engineer starts. Julian's number is 198984, and it is listed on this site precisely so that it can be checked.
Unvented hot water and LPG are qualifications held on top of gas registration. If your job needs either, ask directly. It is the fastest way to avoid a wasted visit, and it is why some jobs in the villages around Bristol take several phone calls to place.
Illegal gas work is not a technicality. Unregistered fitting is the origin of most carbon monoxide incidents in British homes, and the person who suffers is almost never the person who did the work. A landlord who uses an unregistered fitter also has no valid certificate, whatever paperwork they were handed.
This page covers gas work as a whole. Each job below has its own page with the detail on it.
The general call-out. Something is not right and you are not sure what. Boiler, heating or gas appliance work carried out safely and to standard, with the fault traced properly rather than guessed at.
Every gas appliance in the property checked, not just the boiler. Worth booking after moving in, after somebody else has done work, or where an older person lives alone.
The CP12. A legal requirement every twelve months for any let property, covering every gas appliance the landlord owns. Issued on the day and sent through electronically.
For properties off the mains gas grid, common in the villages around Bristol. A separate qualification on top of Gas Safe registration, which rules out a good number of engineers.
Also here: gas cooker installation and repair, and gas leak detection and repair. If you smell gas right now, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before ringing anybody else.
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check the registration number on the Gas Safe Register website. Julian’s number is 198984. A great many dangerous installations that get found were fitted by someone who was never registered at all.
No. Julian works Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and weekend mornings. If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, which is free and answered around the clock.
No. Julian covers heating, boilers and gas work only. Bathrooms, toilets, taps, water leaks and general plumbing are not services he offers, and he would rather tell you that than take the job on badly.
It is a deliberate choice. Knowing one manufacturer thoroughly means faults are found quickly and the right part goes in first time. Servicing and safety checks still cover every make.
An annual gas safety check on every appliance and flue, carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, with a copy given to tenants within 28 days and records kept for two years. See landlord gas safety certificates.

Yes. Any home with a gas appliance should have one, sited to the manufacturer’s instructions and tested regularly. Carbon monoxide has no smell and no colour, so an alarm is the only reliable warning.
Call Julian on 07831 718509. Quotes are free with no obligation, and there is no call-out charge added on top anywhere within the service area. Late summer is the quiet window for servicing and safety checks, so booking then usually gets a date within the week rather than joining the autumn queue.
Julian works alone. The person who answers the phone surveys your home, fits the boiler and comes back if anything needs attention. No rotating subcontractors, no call centre, and honest scheduling: if he cannot get to you until next week he says so.
