Plumber in Bristol
Gas Safe registered, Worcester Bosch accredited, and forty years on the same patch. Julian covers hot water, boilers, central heating and gas work across Bristol from his base in Staple Hill.
Call Julian 07831 718509Almost all of Julian's work comes from repeat customers and recommendations. Over forty years, that is the only measure that means anything.
J K Morgan is a plumbing and heating business, but not a general plumber. Julian works on hot water, boilers, central heating and gas appliances. He does not do bathrooms, taps, toilets or water leaks, and being clear about that on the phone saves everybody a wasted visit.
Everything below is work he does himself, start to finish. There are no subcontractors, no call centre and no salesman in between. The person who answers the phone is the person who turns up.
Julian has worked as a gas engineer since the mid-eighties, operating as a sole trader from 1 North Street in Staple Hill. The business has never advertised heavily and has never needed to. Almost all of the work comes from repeat customers and recommendations across Bristol, which over four decades is the only reputation that actually means anything. He is listed on Checkatrade and holds Worcester Bosch accredited installer status, both of which can be checked independently before you ring.
Hot water is where most plumbing calls to Julian start. A cylinder that has given up, a heater that never gets hot enough, or an immersion that has stopped working altogether. Each of these is a different job with a different answer, so each has its own page.
Supplying and fitting a water heater sized properly for the house. Sizing is the part people get wrong, and it is the part that decides whether you are happy with it in three years.
Removing an old or failing cylinder and fitting a modern one. Most cylinders coming out now are decades old and losing a great deal of heat through poor insulation.
Fitting or replacing the electric element inside a hot water cylinder. It is the backup that keeps hot water running when a boiler is down, and it is worth knowing yours works.
No hot water, or not enough of it. The fault could be the boiler, the cylinder, a valve or the controls, and tracing it properly beats replacing parts one at a time.
Hot water is one part of what Julian does. The rest sits under three headings, each with its own set of jobs underneath it.
Installation, replacement, servicing and repair. Worcester Bosch accredited, which is what allows guarantees of up to twelve years on a new Greenstar. Combi, system and conventional, sized from a survey rather than a chart.
Whole systems, radiators and unvented cylinders. Older Bristol houses often have the pipework rather than the boiler as the real constraint, and that gets looked at before anything is quoted.
Safety inspections, landlord certificates, cookers, LPG and gas leak detection. All gas work in this country has to be done by a registered engineer, and Julian's number is 198984.
Julian answers his own phone. He will tell you straight away whether the job is one he does, and roughly when he could get to you. If it falls outside what he takes on, he says so there and then rather than after a wasted appointment.
For anything larger than a repair he comes out and looks. Mains water pressure, flow rate, the state of the pipework and how the household actually uses hot water all change the answer, and none of them can be judged over the phone.
One figure covering everything, with nothing added afterwards. No obligation and no pushy follow-up. Plenty of customers take a quote, think about it for months, and come back when they are ready.
Dust sheets down before anything is touched. The old unit taken away. The house cleaned at the end of each day rather than only at the end of the job.
Controls set up and explained properly rather than left with a manual on the side. Any gas work notified, any guarantee registered, and the paperwork handed to you.
Julian stands behind his own workmanship as well as the manufacturer warranty. If something needs a second look he comes back. Being minutes away rather than an hour is what makes that practical.
Julian works from 1 North Street in Staple Hill and covers Bristol and roughly ten miles around it. There are no call-out charges and no travel costs added on top, wherever you are inside that area.
Nearest first: Staple Hill, Downend, Fishponds and Mangotsfield are minutes away. Kingswood, Hanham, Warmley and Winterbourne are comfortably under ten minutes. Yate and Keynsham sit at the outer edge. The full list is here.
Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm, and weekend mornings. There are no emergency or out-of-hours callouts. If you smell gas, do not wait for an engineer: call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
J K Morgan has never grown into a team, and that has been a deliberate choice rather than an accident. It has consequences worth understanding before you ring, because some of them suit a household and some of them do not.
The person who answers the phone surveys the property, does the work, and comes back if anything needs attention afterwards. Nothing gets lost between a salesman, an estimator and whoever turns up on the day, because there is only one of him.
If he cannot get to you until next week he will say so, rather than booking you in and letting the day slide. Plenty of customers have been with him for twenty years on exactly that basis.
The trade-off is real. Working hours are Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and weekend mornings. There is no emergency callout service. If you need somebody at midnight, this is not the right business, and it is better to know that now.
Julian does not publish prices, and there is a straightforward reason for that. Two houses on the same street can need very different work for what sounds like the same job, because of pipework, access, mains pressure or what somebody else did to the system a decade ago. A number quoted before anybody has looked is a number that changes later, and that is exactly what people complain about.
Instead, every job larger than a small repair starts with a free survey. Julian looks at the property, measures what needs measuring, and gives one fixed figure covering everything. Labour, parts, removal and disposal of anything being taken out, commissioning, any notification required and registration of any guarantee are all inside it. Nothing is added at the end, and there is no obligation attached to the quote.
Payment is by cash or bank transfer on completion. There is no finance or credit arrangement offered. That keeps things simple, and it means there is no commission built into the price you are given, which is not true everywhere.
There are also no call-out charges and no travel costs, anywhere inside the service area. A job in Yate costs the same as a job in Staple Hill.
Any work on a gas appliance or gas pipework in this country must be carried out by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. It is a criminal offence for anybody else to do it, paid or unpaid, and that applies to fitting a cooker as much as to installing a boiler. It applies whether the person calls themselves a plumber, a handyman or a friend who knows what he is doing.
Every registered engineer carries an ID card with a photograph, a licence number and an expiry date. On the back it lists exactly which categories of work they are qualified for, because boilers, cookers, fires and LPG are all separate. Asking to see it is entirely normal and no competent engineer takes offence. If somebody is reluctant, that has told you what you needed to know.
Julian's registration number is 198984 and it is published here precisely so it can be checked before he arrives rather than afterwards. Unvented hot water and LPG are held as additional qualifications on top of it. If your job needs either, ask directly, because it is the fastest way to avoid a wasted visit.
