What Bristol Customers Say

Almost all of Julian's work comes from repeat customers and recommendations. Over forty years, that is the only measure that means anything.

When You Just Need a Gas Engineer

Most people ring knowing something is wrong without knowing what it is. The boiler is making a noise it did not make before. There is a smell they cannot place. A cooker has been delivered and needs connecting. An estate agent has asked for paperwork nobody understands.

This page is for that call. Julian is a Gas Safe registered engineer covering Bristol and roughly ten miles around Staple Hill, and he has been doing it since the mid-eighties. Describe what is happening and he will tell you what it is, whether it is a job he does, and roughly when he could get to you.

If you already know what you need, the individual pages have the detail: gas safety inspections, landlord certificates, LPG, gas cookers and gas leak detection.

The Calls That Come In Most

Something is not right with the boiler

A noise, a smell, a pressure gauge doing something odd, or a pilot light that keeps going out. Julian diagnoses the actual fault rather than guessing. Repairs are Worcester Bosch only, and he will say so on the phone rather than after a wasted visit.

An appliance needs connecting or moving

A new cooker delivered, an old one to be taken away, or a supply that needs capping properly because the appliance has gone. All of it is legally restricted work, even the small jobs.

Paperwork somebody has asked for

A landlord certificate for a letting agent, or a safety inspection before a sale or after moving in. Issued on the day and sent through electronically.

You are not sure and want someone to look

Perfectly reasonable, and common. A gas safety inspection covers every appliance in the property, the pipework, the flues and the ventilation, and tells you where you stand.

Checking an Engineer Before You Let Them In

1

It is the law, not a preference

Any work on a gas appliance or gas pipework in this country must be done by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. It is a criminal offence for anybody else, paid or unpaid. That applies to connecting a cooker as much as to fitting a boiler.

2

Ask to see the card

Every registered engineer carries one. Asking is normal and no competent engineer takes offence. If somebody is reluctant, that has told you what you needed to know.

3

Check the photo and the expiry date

The card carries a photograph, a licence number and start and expiry dates. Cards are reissued annually. One that has run out is not a card.

4

Turn it over

The reverse lists exactly which work the engineer is qualified for. Boilers, cookers, fires and LPG are separate categories. Registration for one does not make somebody competent at another.

5

Verify the number independently

Check it on the Gas Safe Register website or by phone before work starts. Julian's is 198984, published here so it can be checked before he arrives rather than afterwards.

6

Ask about the extra tickets

Unvented hot water and LPG are held on top of gas registration. If your job needs either, ask directly. It is the fastest way to avoid a wasted visit, and it is why some jobs in the villages around Bristol take several calls to place.

Illegal gas work is not a technicality. Unregistered fitting is behind most carbon monoxide incidents in British homes, and the person who suffers is rarely the person who did the work.

What Julian Does, and What He Does Not

Being blunt about this saves everybody time, and it is the first thing he will tell you on the phone.

Yes

Boilers, central heating, hot water, gas safety inspections, landlord certificates, gas cookers, LPG and gas leak detection. Servicing and safety work on every make of appliance.

Worcester Bosch only

Boiler repairs. Accredited installer status means the fault codes and known weak points on that range are genuinely familiar, so the right part goes in first time rather than by elimination. See Worcester Bosch boiler repair.

No

General plumbing. No bathrooms, taps, toilets or water leaks. No power flushing as a standalone job. No emergency or out-of-hours callouts. He would rather turn a job down than take it on outside what he knows properly.

Working hours are Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and weekend mornings. If you smell gas at any hour, do not wait for an engineer: leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

One more thing worth saying plainly, because it comes up on the phone most weeks. People often apologise for ringing about something small, or worry that a question is too basic to be worth an engineer's time. It is not. A pilot light that keeps going out, a smell you cannot place, a cooker that has been delivered and needs connecting, a letter from an agent asking for a certificate you have never heard of. All of that is ordinary work and all of it is better asked about than left. Julian would far rather take a two minute call that turns out to be nothing than be called to something that has been quietly getting worse for a month.

How a Visit Goes

Julian works alone, so the person who answers the phone is the person who turns up, does the work, and comes back if anything needs a second look. There are no subcontractors, no call centre and no salesman in between.

That also means honest scheduling. If he cannot get to you until next week he says so, rather than booking you in and letting the day slide. Plenty of customers have been with him twenty years or more on exactly that basis.

For repairs and inspections the price is agreed before work starts. For anything larger there is a free survey first, then one fixed quote covering everything, with nothing added at the end and no obligation attached. Payment is cash or bank transfer on completion. There is no finance arrangement, which means no commission is built into the price you are given.

Dust sheets go down before anything is touched, old parts and appliances are taken away, and the house is left clean. Any gas work is notified in the normal way and the paperwork is handed to you rather than promised.

Across Bristol

Nearest first: Staple Hill, Downend, Fishponds and Mangotsfield are minutes away. Kingswood, Hanham, Warmley and Winterbourne are comfortably under ten minutes. Yate and Keynsham sit at the outer edge. There are no call-out charges and no travel costs anywhere inside the service area.

Warning Signs on Any Gas Appliance

These are the things a registered engineer looks for, and they are worth knowing because most of them are visible to anybody standing in the room. If you spot one, it is a reason to ring rather than something to keep an eye on.

A yellow or orange flame

Gas should burn with a crisp blue flame. Yellow or orange means incomplete combustion, which is how carbon monoxide is produced. On a hob it is easy to see. On a boiler or fire behind a cover it is not, which is one of the reasons the annual check exists.

Sooting or black marks

Staining around a boiler case, a fire surround or above an appliance means products of combustion are not leaving the building as they should. That is a flue or ventilation problem and it should be looked at before the appliance is used again.

Excessive condensation

Windows streaming in a room with a gas appliance, beyond what cooking or a shower would explain, can mean the appliance is putting moisture into the room rather than out through the flue.

Pilot lights that keep going out

On older appliances a pilot that repeatedly fails is often the safety device doing its job and telling you something is wrong. Relighting it repeatedly is treating the symptom.

Carbon Monoxide: the One You Cannot Detect

A gas escape announces itself, because gas is deliberately given a smell. Carbon monoxide has none. No colour, no taste, no smell. It is produced when a gas appliance burns incompletely, and the symptoms are easily mistaken for something ordinary.

Headaches, dizziness, nausea and tiredness that improve when you leave the house and return when you come back. Several people in a household affected at once, or pets as well. Those patterns matter more than any single symptom.

An audible carbon monoxide alarm to the current British Standard costs very little and is the only reliable way to detect a gas you cannot sense. Fit one, site it according to its instructions, and test it as you would a smoke alarm. Annual safety checks exist principally to catch the conditions that produce carbon monoxide before they become dangerous.

If you suspect it, open the windows, turn the appliance off, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
