Replacing an old, unreliable or broken boiler? Julian fits modern, energy-efficient boilers across Bristol, Gas Safe registered, Worcester Bosch accredited, with up to a 12-year guarantee.
Almost all of Julian's work comes from repeat customers and recommendations. Over forty years, that is the only measure that means anything.
If your boiler keeps breaking down, costs a fortune to run, or simply isn’t up to the job anymore, a modern replacement will heat your home faster and cut your energy bills. Julian recommends the right boiler for your home and fits it cleanly and safely.
Every replacement starts with a free survey rather than a price over the phone. Julian looks at the existing boiler and its position, the flue route, the mains water pressure and flow rate, the state of the pipework and radiators, and how the household actually uses hot water. Those things decide what the right boiler is, and none of them can be judged from a postcode and a bedroom count. The figure you are given afterwards is fixed for your house rather than a range from an online calculator.
Part of new boilers in Bristol, alongside installation, servicing and repair.
Most gas boilers have a useful life of twelve to fifteen years.
One is bad luck. Three in two winters is the boiler telling you something.
Older non-condensing boilers waste heat straight out of the flue, every day.
There comes a point where putting money into an old boiler stops making sense. Julian will tell you when you have reached it rather than quietly taking the repair work.
Under ten years, with parts available and a repair in the low hundreds, fixing it is usually right. Past fifteen, out of warranty, with a failed heat exchanger or gas valve, the repair approaches a meaningful share of a new boiler that would carry a fresh guarantee.
Topping up repeatedly treats the symptom. A recurring loss means water is escaping somewhere, or the expansion vessel has failed. Both are worth finding early, because a slow leak under a floor costs far more than the repair would have.
Limescale on the heat exchanger, which matters in the harder water around Bristol. Left alone it reduces efficiency and eventually kills the exchanger, one of the most expensive parts to replace.
Once a manufacturer stops supporting a model, a straightforward repair becomes a long wait or an impossibility. That is usually the moment replacement stops being a choice. If the boiler still has life in it, Julian will say so and quote for a repair instead.
Boilers overwhelmingly fail in the first genuinely cold week of the year, because that is the first time all winter the system is asked to work hard. Every engineer in Bristol is busy in that week, which is the worst possible moment to be choosing a replacement.
If a boiler is limping rather than dead, or has needed two repairs in the same season, late summer and early autumn are the sensible time to deal with it. Appointments are easy to get, you are not making a decision in a cold house, and there is time to consider whether a different system type would suit the household better rather than replacing like with like by default.
Getting a quote costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Plenty of customers take one, think about it for a few months, and come back when they are ready. Knowing the number in advance is a great deal more comfortable than finding it out in January.
Julian looks at the existing boiler and its position, the radiators, your mains water pressure and how many bathrooms the house has, then recommends the right replacement rather than the dearest one on the shelf.
Covers the boiler, labour, the flush, the filter, removal of the old unit and guarantee registration. The price you agree is the price you pay.
A like-for-like swap in the same position is normally one day. Moving the boiler, or changing from a cylinder system to a combi, takes about two days because of the pipework and tank removal.
The system is flushed and dosed with inhibitor and a magnetic filter fitted, protecting both the new boiler and the manufacturer guarantee.
Set to the manufacturer figures, controls explained properly, and the old boiler plus any redundant cylinder or tanks taken away.
Most combi boiler replacements start from around £2,000, depending on the boiler and your home. You get a clear, fixed quote before any work begins.
Usually, provided your mains flow rate supports it and the household does not need two showers running at once. Julian measures the flow at the survey rather than assuming.
Yes, all of it, as part of the job. The house is left clean and tidy.
Up to twelve years on a Worcester Bosch Greenstar, confirmed in your quote. Annual servicing is required to keep it valid.

A like-for-like swap in the same position is cheapest. Moving the boiler means new gas, water and condensate runs plus often a new flue penetration. Converting from a cylinder system costs more again, and heavily sludged pipework may need more than a standard flush.
The boiler, all labour, a full system flush, a magnetic filter, removal and disposal of the old boiler and any redundant cylinder or tanks, commissioning, Gas Safe notification and guarantee registration. Nothing gets added afterwards.
If the boiler is limping rather than dead, late summer beats January. Availability is better, you are not deciding in a cold house, and there is time to consider whether a different system type suits you. Julian gets busy from October.
Cash or bank transfer on completion. Julian does not offer boiler finance or credit, which keeps things simple and means no commission is built into the price you are quoted.
The easiest replacement is the one that puts the same type of boiler back in the same place. It is quicker, cheaper and less disruptive. It is not always the right answer, though, and a replacement is the one realistic opportunity to fix a system that has never quite suited the household.
Sensible where the household is one bathroom and the existing combi has kept up. A modern condensing unit in the same position, on the same flue route, is usually a single day's work with the heating back on the same evening.
Removing a hot water cylinder and the loft tanks frees up a cupboard and often a loft corner. It suits smaller households where two outlets are rarely used at once. Where two bathrooms are in regular use it usually disappoints, which is why it is discussed properly rather than assumed.
The opposite move, and increasingly common in larger houses. A system boiler with an unvented cylinder holds mains pressure at two showers at once, which no combi will do. It takes longer and costs more, but it solves the problem permanently rather than moving it.
A replacement is not only about the boiler on the wall. The old unit is disconnected, capped off and taken away, along with any redundant cylinder, feed tank and expansion tank where a conversion is involved. Pipework that no longer serves anything is removed rather than left capped in a loft for someone else to puzzle over later.
The existing radiators and pipework are flushed before the new boiler is commissioned, and a magnetic filter is fitted. Decades of accumulated sludge is the single most common cause of an early heat exchanger failure, and most manufacturers will decline a guarantee claim where no filter was installed. Both are inside the quoted price rather than offered as an extra.
If the radiators and pipework are as tired as the boiler, replacing the boiler alone will disappoint. Central heating system replacement covers doing the lot together.
