What Bristol Customers Say

Almost all of Julian's work comes from repeat customers and recommendations. Over forty years, that is the only measure that means anything.

Water Heater Installation Across Bristol

A water heater is a simple thing that is easy to get wrong. Fit one too small and it runs out halfway through a shower. Fit one too large and you pay to keep water hot that nobody uses. Julian sizes it against how the household actually behaves rather than against the square footage of the house.

He supplies and fits water heaters across Bristol and roughly ten miles around Staple Hill. Gas Safe registered under 198984, which can be checked independently, and forty years working the same streets.

If you are not sure whether a water heater is what you need at all, ring and describe the problem. In a fair number of houses the right answer turns out to be a cylinder replacement or a change of boiler type instead, and Julian will say so.

Getting the Size Right

Sizing is the whole job. Everything else is pipework. These are the four things that actually decide it, and none of them can be judged over the phone.

How many outlets run at once

One person showering while the kitchen tap runs is a very different demand from two bathrooms in use on a weekday morning. Households tend to describe the house; what matters is the busiest ten minutes of the day.

Mains pressure and flow rate

Both get measured at survey. Pressure is how hard the water pushes, flow rate is how much arrives per minute, and they are not the same thing. A heater cannot deliver more than the incoming supply gives it.

Recovery time

How fast the unit reheats after it has been drained matters more than raw capacity in a busy house. A smaller heater that recovers quickly often suits better than a larger one that does not.

Where it can physically go

Space, ventilation and the route for pipework all constrain the choice. In older Bristol terraces the position is usually the binding constraint rather than the specification.

How the Job Runs

1

The call

Describe what is happening now. Running out of hot water, never getting hot enough, or nothing at all. That first description usually tells Julian whether this is a sizing problem, a fault, or the wrong type of system for the house.

2

Survey and measurement

Pressure and flow rate measured at the tap, the existing arrangement looked at, and the position for the new unit agreed. Free, and with no obligation attached.

3

A fixed quote

One figure covering the unit, all labour, any pipework alterations, removal of the old one and commissioning. Nothing added at the end.

4

Installation

Dust sheets down first. The old unit drained, disconnected and taken away. Most water heater installations are a single day, though a change of position adds pipework and time.

5

Commissioning and handover

Set up, tested, and the temperature controls explained. Any gas work is notified in the normal way and the paperwork is handed to you before Julian leaves.

Is a Water Heater Actually the Answer?

People often ring asking for one thing and need another. It is worth knowing how the options compare before you spend money.

Water heater

Suits a specific outlet or a smaller property, and suits situations where running a full system is overkill. Simple, and the cheapest of the three to fit.

Cylinder replacement

If the house already has a cylinder and it has failed or is losing heat badly, replacing it is usually the better spend. Modern insulation on a new cylinder is a great deal better than on one fitted decades ago.

Combi boiler

If the boiler is also near the end of its life, replacing both at once with a combi can cost less than doing them separately, and frees up the cupboard the cylinder was in.

Julian will regularly recommend the smaller job. If a repair or a cylinder swap solves it for a fraction of what a new system costs, he will say so rather than quoting the bigger piece of work. That approach is why the business runs on repeat customers rather than advertising.

Water Heaters in Bristol Homes

Victorian terraces

Common around Fishponds, Kingswood and Staple Hill. Space is the constraint rather than demand, and the position for a unit is usually decided by where the pipework can run.

Postwar semis

Across Downend and Filton. Straightforward houses with a single bathroom, sensible proportions and predictable demand. These are the easiest to size correctly.

Modern estates

Bradley Stoke and Emersons Green often have two bathrooms. Here a water heater is rarely the whole answer on its own and the conversation usually turns to cylinder capacity.

Off the mains gas grid

Out towards Hambrook and the villages, some properties have no mains gas. Julian is LPG qualified, which rules out a good number of engineers before you have finished ringing round.

Types of Water Heater

Water heater is a broad term and it covers several different things. Knowing which one is being discussed saves a good deal of confusion when comparing quotes, because two engineers can use the same phrase for very different equipment.

Storage heaters

Hold a quantity of water hot and ready. Good where several outlets are used in quick succession, because the stored volume covers the demand. The limit is the tank size, and once it is empty you wait for it to recover.

Instantaneous heaters

Heat water as it flows through, with nothing stored. They never run out, but the flow rate is capped by how fast the unit can raise the temperature. In winter, incoming mains water is colder, so the same unit delivers less.

Point-of-use units

Small heaters serving a single outlet, fitted close to it. Useful for an outbuilding, a cloakroom or anywhere a long pipe run means a wait for hot water. Cheap to fit and simple to maintain.

Why Winter Changes the Answer

This catches people out more than any other single factor. Incoming mains water in Bristol is noticeably colder in January than in July. A heater raises water by a certain number of degrees, so if it starts colder, it finishes colder, or it delivers less of it per minute to reach the same temperature.

The practical result is a unit that seemed perfectly adequate when it was fitted in summer and disappoints by December. Julian sizes against winter conditions rather than the day of the survey, which occasionally means recommending something a little larger than the household expected. It is the difference between being happy with it in three years and replacing it.

Looking After One

Scale is the enemy

Hard water leaves scale on heating surfaces, which insulates them and forces the unit to work harder for the same result. It is the main reason water heaters in this area rarely reach the lifespan their manufacturer suggests, and there is no way around it beyond maintenance.

Set the temperature properly

Too low encourages bacteria to survive in stored water. Too high wastes energy, accelerates scaling and risks scalding at the tap. There is a correct setting and Julian sets it rather than leaving it at whatever the factory chose.

Watch the pressure relief

On any pressurised unit, the discharge from a relief valve is a warning rather than a nuisance. If you see water coming from a discharge pipe, something has changed and it wants looking at before it becomes a failure.

Have it serviced

An annual check on a gas-fired unit covers combustion, seals and safety devices, exactly as it would on a boiler. It also catches the components that are drifting rather than broken, which is when they are cheap to deal with.

Fitted Properly, Not Just Connected

A water heater is only as good as what it is connected to. Undersized pipework upstream will strangle a perfectly good unit, and older properties in Bristol frequently have sections of narrower pipe left over from earlier work. That gets checked before the new unit goes on rather than after the first disappointing shower.

Where the heater is gas-fired, the flue route and ventilation both have to be right, and the installation is notified in the normal way. Julian is Gas Safe registered under 198984, which can be checked independently on the Gas Safe Register before he arrives.

One thing worth deciding before Julian arrives: where the unit is going to live. A water heater sited close to the outlet it serves delivers hot water almost immediately. Sited at the other end of the house, you run several litres of cold water down the drain every time before anything warm appears. In an older Bristol property the pipe run is often the deciding factor rather than the specification of the heater, and it is far cheaper to get right at installation than to change afterwards.
