Central Heating System Replacement
Taking out a tired system and putting in one that suits the house. Boiler, radiators, pipework and controls designed together, not patched one piece at a time.

Central heating › System replacement
Almost every house in Bristol already has central heating. What people actually need is rarely a first installation, it is a replacement of something that was fitted decades ago and has been patched ever since. That is a different job, and this page is about that job.
A system replacement means the boiler, the radiators, the pipework and the controls are looked at as one thing and specified together. A boiler replacement on its own puts a modern appliance onto whatever is already there. Sometimes that is exactly right. Where the rest of the system is the problem, it is money spent for very little.
Julian will tell you which of the two you need after looking, and he says boiler-only more often than not. If you are having a system put into a property that has never had one, that is covered on the central heating installation page instead.
A full system replacement is the largest job Julian does, and the one that makes the most difference to how a house feels to live in. It is also the one where the survey matters most, because the decisions taken before anything is ordered determine whether the house is comfortable for the next twenty years or merely warmer than it was.
One of these on its own is usually a repair. Three or four together, and you are replacing a system whether you call it that or not.
Not one cold radiator, but a pattern. The far end of the house lukewarm however long the heating runs. That points at pipework and sizing, and no new boiler fixes it.
Single panel units from decades ago put out far less heat than a modern double panel of the same size. If the boiler has already been swapped once and the house still feels cold, the radiators are the reason.
A pump one year, a valve the next, then a leak on a joint. Once faults start appearing in different components rather than the same one, the system is telling you something.
A mechanical timer and one thermostat in the hall, heating the whole house to suit one room. Modern controls with proper zoning cut running costs without touching the boiler at all.
This is the question worth getting right, because the difference in cost is substantial and the wrong answer disappoints in both directions.
Right where the radiators are modern, the pipework is sound and the house heats evenly. The boiler has simply come to the end of its life. Usually a single day, and the cheapest way to get another fifteen years. See boiler replacement.
The middle option, and often the sweet spot in older Bristol houses. New boiler, new correctly sized radiators, existing pipework flushed and reused where it is sound. Transforms comfort for well under the cost of a full system.
Boiler, radiators, pipework and controls. Right where the pipework itself is the constraint, where the layout is wrong, or where the system type is changing. Four to five days in most houses.
Julian will recommend the smallest of these that actually solves your problem. If new radiators and a proper balance will do it, he will say so rather than quoting the bigger job. That is why the business runs on repeat customers rather than advertising.
Julian looks at every radiator, the pipework layout where it can be seen, the mains pressure and flow rate, the boiler position and the flue route. He asks how the household actually uses the house, because a system sized for rooms nobody heats is money wasted.
One figure covering everything: boiler, radiators, pipework, controls, all labour, removal and disposal of the old system, commissioning, Gas Safe notification and guarantee registration. Nothing added at the end, and no obligation attached.
Dust sheets down first. The system is drained, the old boiler disconnected, and old radiators come off the walls. Where the house is converting from a cylinder system, the loft tanks come out too. Heating and hot water are off from here.
The slow part. New pipe runs mean lifting floorboards, usually in the hall, landing and a room or two. Carpet is rolled back rather than cut. Where a single pipe layout is being converted to two pipe, this is where that happens.
New boiler mounted and connected, radiators hung and piped. Most households get heating and hot water back at the end of this day, though the job is not finished.
System flushed, dosed with inhibitor, magnetic filter fitted, then balanced radiator by radiator so every room warms at the same rate. Controls set up and explained. Paperwork handed over, floorboards down, house cleaned.
Worth understanding, because it is the most common reason a whole-system replacement is genuinely necessary rather than optional in this part of Bristol.
A fair number of houses around Kingswood, Fishponds and Staple Hill still run single pipe systems, fitted when central heating first went into those streets. Water leaves the boiler, passes through the first radiator, and what comes out of it feeds the second. By the fourth or fifth radiator the water arriving is noticeably cooler than what left the boiler.
The result is a house that is too warm downstairs at the near end and never warm enough at the far end. No amount of balancing fixes it, because the fault is the pipe layout rather than the settings. Nor does a bigger boiler, though plenty of households have bought one hoping it would.
The permanent answer is converting to a two pipe layout, where every radiator gets water straight from the flow and returns it separately. That means new pipework, which means a system replacement. It is one of the few jobs where the whole system genuinely does need doing, and it is worth knowing before you spend money on anything smaller.
System replacement quotes are hard to compare because two prices can cover very different amounts of work. Everything below is included rather than added afterwards, and it is worth checking line by line against anything else you have been quoted.
Decades of sludge come out before anything new goes on. The system is dosed with inhibitor to slow further corrosion, and a magnetic filter is fitted. Most manufacturers will decline a guarantee claim where no filter was installed.
Old boiler, old radiators, redundant cylinder and loft tanks all taken away. Pipework that no longer serves anything comes out rather than being capped and left under a floor for somebody else to find.
Every radiator's return valve set so the flow is shared properly across the house. This is the step most often skipped, and it is the difference between a system that works and one that has a cold room.
Commissioned to the manufacturer's procedure, notified to Gas Safe, guarantee registered with Worcester on your behalf, benchmark book completed and handed to you on the day.
Payment is cash or bank transfer on completion. There is no finance arrangement, which means no commission is built into the price you are given. Worcester Bosch accredited installer status allows guarantees of up to twelve years on a new Greenstar, which a non-accredited fitter cannot register on the same boiler.
Solid walls losing heat faster than cavity walls, so radiators sized from a standard chart come out too small. Original pipework is often narrower than modern standards. These are the houses where a whole-system replacement genuinely earns its cost.
Across Downend and Filton. Cavity walls and sensible layouts, so the pipework is usually sound. Here a boiler and radiators is normally enough, and the full system is overkill.
Extensions and loft conversions add heat demand that the original system was never sized for. Bolting radiators onto a system already at its limit moves the cold room rather than curing it.
