New boilers › Worcester Bosch boiler repair
Most engineers will take on any boiler. Julian took the other route and works on Worcester Bosch only. That sounds like a limitation until your boiler stops on a Tuesday morning and the person looking at it has seen the same fault on the same model a hundred times.
Fault codes, component behaviour and the known weak points differ between manufacturers. Knowing one range properly means the diagnosis is quick and the right part goes in first time, rather than a sequence of parts fitted by elimination while you pay for each one.
If your boiler is another make, he will say so on the phone rather than after a wasted visit. Servicing and gas safety work still cover every make, so a non-Worcester boiler that is working properly can be looked after here in the normal way.
None of these is a diagnosis over the phone, but knowing the pattern is half the job.
The gauge falls below the marked band and the boiler locks out. Sometimes it is the expansion vessel losing its charge, sometimes a small leak somewhere on the system. Topping it up weekly treats the symptom and hides the cause.
Classic plate heat exchanger scaling on a combi. The heating uses a different path through the boiler, so it carries on working perfectly and the household concludes the boiler is fine. Common in this area because of the water.
Once a week is a nuisance, once a day is a fault. The code on the display tells an accredited engineer a great deal, and it is worth writing down before you reset it.
Kettling, banging or a rumble usually means debris and scale on the main heat exchanger. That is a system problem showing up in the boiler, and fitting a magnetic filter matters as much as the repair itself.
Tell him the model if you can find it, and the code on the display if there is one. Both are on the boiler itself. That alone often narrows it to one or two possibilities before he sets off.
The fault is traced properly rather than parts replaced until the symptom goes. Slower on the day, considerably cheaper overall, and it avoids paying for a component that was never broken.
You are told what has failed, what fixing it involves and what it costs before any work starts. Nothing is added afterwards.
Common parts are carried. Where one has to be ordered, he tells you which part and when he can get it rather than leaving you guessing.
Under ten years old with a single failed component, repair. Two faults in one season, or parts becoming scarce, and he will tell you plainly that a replacement is the better spend.
Worcester guarantees run up to twelve years on a Greenstar fitted by an accredited installer. If your boiler is still inside its term, the repair may be covered by Worcester rather than by you. Worth establishing before anybody starts.
Almost every manufacturer guarantee requires a service each year, recorded properly. Miss one and a claim in year eight can be refused however sound the installation was. It is the most common reason people pay for a repair they assumed was covered.
Most manufacturers now require a magnetic filter. If a heat exchanger blocks with sludge and no filter was fitted, the claim goes nowhere. One is fitted as standard on every installation here.
The benchmark book at the front of the boiler manual is the document that proves all of this. Keep it. It gets completed at every visit, and it goes with the house if you sell.
A note on timing, because it makes a real difference to what a repair costs you in inconvenience. Boilers overwhelmingly fail in the first genuinely cold week of the year, because that is the first time all winter the system is asked to work hard. Every engineer in Bristol is busy in that week. If your boiler has been making a noise since September, or locking out once a fortnight since October, that is the boiler telling you it needs looking at while an appointment is still easy to get. A fault investigated in autumn is a repair. The same fault in January, with a cold house and a queue ahead of you, becomes an emergency and often becomes a replacement decision made under pressure.
Three things take a minute and occasionally save you a visit altogether.
Worcester boilers show a fault code on the display before you reset them. Resetting clears it. That code is the single most useful thing you can tell an engineer, so note it first.
If the needle sits below the marked band, the boiler will not fire. That is the fault rather than a mystery, and a slow drop over months usually means a small leak worth finding.
Timer reset by a power cut, thermostat turned down, or a tripped circuit. Not patronising, just the things that get overlooked when a house has gone cold.
Usually on a label behind the front panel or underneath the boiler. Greenstar 8000, 4000, CDi and so on. It tells Julian which parts to bring.
Worcester boilers are the most common make in the houses Julian works in, partly because he has been fitting them here for decades. Plenty of the boilers he repairs around Staple Hill, Downend and Fishponds are ones he installed himself. There are no call-out charges and no travel costs anywhere inside the service area.

Boilers rarely fail because the boiler is bad. They fail because of what is going through them, or because a component that has been quietly working for a decade finally gives up. Knowing which of those it is decides whether a repair is worth doing.
Corrosion debris circulating from old radiators and pipework is the single biggest killer of modern boilers. It blocks the narrow passages inside a heat exchanger and the boiler overheats or fails to transfer heat. This is a system problem presenting as a boiler problem, which is why a repair here is worth nothing without a flush and a filter.
Bristol water leaves scale on any hot surface. On a combi it coats the plate heat exchanger and hot water goes lukewarm while the heating carries on perfectly. On the main heat exchanger it causes the kettling noise people describe as the boiler sounding like a boiling pan.
Diverter valve actuators, pumps, expansion vessels and fans all have a working life. On a boiler past ten years these start going one after another, and that pattern rather than any single failure is what tells you a replacement is coming.
A boiler installed without a filter, commissioned at the wrong flow temperature, or fitted onto pipework too narrow for it will fail early no matter how good the appliance is. Julian sees this often, and it is the reason the survey on an installation matters more than the badge on the boiler.
Worcester Bosch accredited installer status is granted after the manufacturer assesses training and standard of workmanship. Most people know it as the thing that unlocks the twelve year guarantee on a new boiler. It matters on repairs too, for reasons that are less obvious.
Fault codes on a Greenstar mean specific things, and several of them point at more than one possible cause. An engineer who works across a dozen makes reads the code, looks it up, and starts with the most likely part. An engineer who works on one range knows which of those causes is common on which model year, and checks that first. The difference shows up as one visit rather than two, and as one part rather than three.
It also means the parts are right. Worcester components are model specific in ways that are easy to get wrong, and a nearly-correct part fitted today becomes another callout in six months. Julian carries the common ones for the models he has installed across Bristol, which is a large proportion of the boilers he is called to.
Note the fault code, then call Julian. Price agreed before any work starts. Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and weekend mornings.
